I have always been fascinated with swords and sorcery from an early age and with the advent of computer generated graphics, works like Tolkien's Lord of the Rings has become a reality. Much of my inspiration for these images comes from these fantasy tales, Norse legend and also the works of the Spanish artist Louis Royo.

I wanted to take away some of the 'cartoon' element that so often accompanies this style of imagery, and attempted to create some look of realism without compromising the fantasy element. As such all the backgrounds, props, styalised clothes and other elements of the composition were sourced from real life. The result is something that is entirely possible without actually being probable.
The beauty of fantasy portraiture is that it is not real and the end result doesn't have to justified to anyone. What is portrayed is exactly what is intended in the eye of the artist. The work is a blend of Medieval Fantasy and Buddhist teachings, with a large slice of my own imagination. The essence of the project was laid out in a storyboard fashion in order to keep track of the sequence in which the images were shot, along with a script describing each image. Many of the background images were shot in Ireland, a country steeped in Celtic history.
The story tells the tale of Princess Illyana as she. evolves from a child of privilege, to an avenging warrior. Tortured by doubt and seduced by the sorceress Freya, she embarks on a journey of discovery, betrayal and redemption. The images were produced in a cool blue tone, evoking a time in ancient history, rather than colour which seemed to be too modern a medium.

All prints are produced by the Digigraphie process onto top quality photo rag archival paper and come with an information certificate describing the print and signed from the author. Sizes refer to the printed sheet and images will be placed within a nominal plain white border allowing for a title and artists seal. Ordering prints is completed online via our shopping cart. Also available is a DVD movie of the entire project - How it was made, Interviews with the principal people involved and a Movie telling the story of Illyana and Freya. The Movie voiceover was undertaken by John Welshman, an esteemed actor who understudied Lawrence Olivier and was the Voice of Mercedes Benz in Germany for over 20 years.
